Tenkara Line Holder
Description
The tenkara line holder is a simple plastic spool with a core of yellow foam used to trap the line after you wind it. Made by Meiho, in Japan. It accommodates tenkara level lines and tenkara tapered lines, and it can be slid onto the handle for transport.
Tips for a better experience using the blue tenkara line holder:
- Keep winding the line until you get close to the tip of the rod, do not stop halfway to remove line twisting. Keeping on winding the line will eventually cause the rod tip to spin freely and automatically get rid of line twisting.
- It is quicker to wind the line around the spool rather than spin the spool to wind the line. Hook your finger through the middle to hold the spool securely while wrapping the line.
Does not include line.

I've used the Tenkara USA 'The Keeper' for several years and found it to work quite well. I wanted another one to manage new level lines, but it was out of stock when I was placing my order. I ordered the Line Holder instead and it is a disappointment. It's difficult to hook a fly onto it, and difficult to wind the line (the foam is too tight to allow the line to easily stack between foam and spool).
I plan to order another 'The Keeper' next time I'm placing an order and probably dump the 'Line Holder' in the trash.
I'm puzzled why Tenkara USA even offers this as a useful item.
Tenkara Line Holder
I have several Tenkara USA rods. My first was the 12' Iwana, and I was hooked. I also have the Amago, Rhodo, and the Hane'--my favorite. The Hane' is perfect for carrying on the motorcycle here in SW Ohio, because it fits easily into the bike's bags. Having all these Tenkara rods, I have a variety of lines in type and length. The Tenkara Line Holder is perfect. I keep the holders in their plastic bag, and mark the bag with what length the line is, and the attached tippet, something like: 15' 5X. This keeps my gear somewhat organized and easily recognizable.
Most of the people that I know locally who use tenkara, started with this line holder. It is inexpensive, simple and does the job. I was fortunate enough to go to Japan and I saw several fishermen using it there. It is not flashy, but you can use a marker on it so that you know which line is on which spool. Simple and efficient, how can you go wrong.
Absolutely LOVE this line holder. Simple, small, lightweight. I just carry this, a small vial of extra flies, some extra tippet, clippers, and forceps. Nothing more needed!
