Description:

Update 02/06: This version of the AYU is now only available in the UK and in Europe (NOT AVAILABLE IN THE USA). Newest version for USA ONLY now available HERE .

The 13ft Ayu is a very versatile rod that offers good reach and great sensation. It's generally a slower/softer rod, and softer than the longer Amago (13 1/2ft). The Ayu features a long premium cork handle that is very ergonomic and does a great job at balancing the rod for extra comfort and a lighter feel. The Ayu is one of the rods featured in our Tenkara Intro film
(the one catching the larger fish).
The rod is a mid-weight tenkara rod, and the most versatile rod we offer, great for catching most fish sizes while staying a bit further and casting precisely and softly.

How much difference does 1ft make? Pushing the tenkara concept of using a long rod for increased control and reach, 1 foot is the difference between holding your arm next to you or slightly stretched in front of you. You can also add more tippet and have 2 - 3 ft more reach.

Tenkara Action Index 5:5

  • Let me start by saying that I have every rod in Tenkara USA's line up and the Ayu is my favorite. Great reach with the 13' length, casts 20ft level lines with ease, can handle larger fish approaching 18-20 inch range with careful fish landing skills. I love this rod!

  • First Tenkara rod
  • Location/type of places I fish: Lower Provo River, Utah
  • The first day out with this rod and it was during a huge BWO hatch. First fish was rather small but second fish was a 15" brown and the rod handled it well. I love the feel of this rod and the whole Tenkara experience. If your thinking about it, just do it, you wont be disappointed.

  • A great rod to have!
  • Location/type of places I fish: San Francisco Bay Area / Anywhere cold and clear
  • Let me tell you about some of the finest close-to-mid-quarters western fly rods north of $500 I have had the pleasure of casting. They all have a smooth mid/full-flex taper with a very supple tip for the purpose of smooth effortless casts and superior tippet protection.

Now let me tell you about this rod. Same characteristics, at least 1/3 the price. I love this rod. Sensational feel without the sensational price. Need I say more?

  • Favorite Tenkara USA rod...
  • Location/type of places I fish: Pac NW Mountain Rivers and Streams
  • This is the rod I grab whenever I can get away with it. It's absolutely my favorite and truth be told I have often chosen where I fish just in order to use this rod. Not the best for tight streams with thick riparian zones, or large rivers with heavy wind, but for everything in between it's great.

This is the best fitting cork grip of all the rods I own and fits my palm just right. The slower action allows the rod to do the work and slows down your casting so you get into an easier frame of mind. The tip has great sensitivity and allows you to feel exactly what your fly is doing underwater. The rod works best, for me, with lighter level lines. I especially like the action even a modest 10" trout can put in this rod, and an agressive 12" trout can be quite fun as the rod starts to take on its own life!

  • A gorgeously appointed rod - reminiscent of bamboo rods.
  • Location/type of places I fish: Utah - the provo, the weber, the Uintahs
  • This is a beautiful rod - I love the green stripes and details such as a gold tip for the lilian. The 5:5 action really makes it feel like a bamboo rod when casting and fighting fish.
I enjoy fishing it with a traditional horse hair line, or the lighter level lines.
It is a pleasure to catch even small fish with the AYU.

  • First Tenkara rod
  • Location/type of places I fish: Small-medium rivers and streams
  • I have always preferred a slower action rod, that and the length are why I chose the Ayu as my first Tenkara rod. The fit and finish of the rod are very good, I am also pleased with the cork handle. The case it comes in is very nice, as is the plug for the handle section. I have landed a few decent sized fish on this rod (15-17")and I can say that it seems to me to be more about technique than anything else. The rod handled it just fine, although I do find myself moving with the fish quite a bit more, chasing it up and downstream. A net would be most helpful (next purchase maybe) I'm very glad I purchased my Ayu and tried Tenkara.

  • the entire tenkara usa package is absolutely amazing...my first try with a tenkara rod and with my first cast Irealized I had a lot to learn...extremely soft action....even softer than my eagle claw fiberglass rod...I have buddies that bought $500 custom rods that aren't made and packaged with this attention to detail...great value and love the ease of setup and takedown...more time fishing with is all that matters

  • A very supple and fun rod. Long length casts well, and handles larger fish with ease. Very portable. I fish primarily smaller streams and lakes in the mountains, all of them usually take a few hours by bike or foot to access. This rod is very portable, light and durable if you treat it well. Can handle bigger rivers like the Gallatin or the Madison after you've mastered the basics. Stop reading reviews and by this rod!

  • Location/type of places I fish: Colorado/Rocky Mountains
  • The Ayu was my first tenkara rod, and is still my favorite. The 13 foot length makes it easy to get good drifts on the other side of the river, while the 5/5 action conjures up the feeling of classic bamboo. Makes 8 inch Rainbows fun, but from personal experience I can assure you that it can also handle a 16 inch Brown. If you prefer dries or wet flies over heavier nymphs, buy this rod!
