We have fallen in love with tenkara nets for stream fly-fishing. These nets are made after the original design of traditional tenkara nets, with the frame positioned at an angle from the handle and a super fine mesh (2mm). The angle makes tenkara nets not only unique and exquisite, but also highly functional, and the fine mesh offers several advantages to angler and fish. If someone were to design a net for stream fishing nowadays they wouldn't arrive at such a great design.

The angled net allows you to position it on your back, through the wading belt ,while the net stays off your back and allows for free movement. If you're hiking the net will never get on your way, even with a backpack you may keep in on your side, and go through bushes without a problem.
When fishing in shallower water you can press it behind your knees after you net a fish so you can use both hands to manage the fish, or take a picture. It has become our favorite picture-taking device. If in deeper water, you can also leave the handle through your wading belt on your side as you have both hands free to unhook the fish or take a picture. The round handle also ensures you can position it between your legs, or the positions mentioned above, and it won't turn. In sum, a very well designed angler's tool.

The super fine mesh is hand-made with nylon, and has 2mm gaps. The very fine mesh has several advantages: it cradles the fish to minimize damage to its skin. It will never snag your fly. And, fish will never get caught as may happen in the wider gaps of some nets. It's also very light weight and will not absorb water, thus completely drying it with a shake.

These nets are hand-made in China with 2 pieces of wood. They are guaranteed free of defects, and were triple inspected. However, they have a limited warranty, which does not cover broken nets. We strongly advise you hold the net in your hand if descending a steep or slippery hill, since falling on it may break it.

Hoop diameter: 10.5inches (27cm) - ideal for fish up to 14", can net fish up to 17".
Mesh depth: 6.5inches (16.5cm) - allows for the fish to be left in the water when holding it with knees or wading belt and keeps fish from jumping out.
Handle length: 13inches (33cm)
Leash included
Made in China.

** Despite the fact that these mesh bags are gentle on fish, Great Britain does not allow for use of knotted mesh bags on fishing nets. Check fishing regulations in your area before using. **

  • Awesome Classic Tenkara Net
  • Location/type of places I fish: Southeastern US - Mountain Streams
  • This net is a great addition to any Tenkara anglers gear. It is very well made and has that very classic Tenkara look. I was recently in Japan and visited a number of great fishing shops. The Tenkara USA net is equal to even the highest end nets I saw in Japan (costing many times what the Tenkara USA nests cost). Another great product from Daniel and the Tenkara USA Team.

  • Does it get any better??
  • Location/type of places I fish: Pennsylvania Wild and Native Trout!
  • This is an awesome net. I have had many nets in the past, but this has to be my favorite. It is absolutely stunning, and the functionality of it is awesome. I love that I can just slide it through my waist strap and fish without having it hanging from me, or getting caught up in my other gear. If you are in the market for a new net do not over look this one.

  • Delighted this net is back.
  • Location/type of places I fish: Western streams and rivers
  • I am delighted to see this net available again. Some months back I wanted to purchase one and Tenkara USA had discontinued the net. I had to beat the bushes around the country to find an example of this net. Did so and I could not be more delighted. It is a thing of beauty but also very functional. I use a Zimmer Guide sling pack so the ease with which you can slide the net through your belt is very convenient. I wondered about the different handle design landing 12-18 inch fish. It works very well and becomes intuitive. I like it better than a series of traditional nets I have owned. Thanks to the gang at Tenkara USA for bringing it back.

  • Unique net - that is just plain cool
  • Location/type of places I fish: Utah - the provo, the weber, the Uintahs
  • Scooping up a fish in this net - honors the fish you catch by cradling them in a work of art.
    Your pictures will look great.
I always get compliments from other anglers on the net and the fish in it.

  • Gotta have this net!
  • Location/type of places I fish: Streams and lakes in Colorado
  • Aside from being ergonomic and very functional, this net is beautiful. I can't tell you hom many people have stopped me on the stream to compliment it. One thing many people don't know is that the mesh is so fine, it can also double as an insect net. Hold the net downstream of a rock, lift it up, and you'll be able to see what kinds of insects are in the river. I paid double the price for my Orvis net but this one is of just as good quality and I prefer it.

  • Amazing little treasure!
  • Location/type of places I fish: Trout streams of Pennsylvania
  • This is a net unlike any other net you've owned or used. First all it is beautiful, something that you will want to use and display. It is well made and is a quality product. I use mine like it is used in the videos on this site. I have it tucked in the waist band of my chest waders and it is easy to grab and use. I would recommend this net to any fisherman who wants a quality, good looking net.

  • Love the Frame, mixed on the net
  • Location/type of places I fish: rivers and streams
  • First off, if you've never tried a tamo style net, you'll love it. Just throw it between your belt and thats it. You forget that its there until you need it, and its never in the way. When it comes to releasing the fish, kneal down, and tuck the handle under your knee and it gives you both hands free to work and safely release the fish.

The wood frame is just beautiful. Its really one of the finest wood frames i've ever seen. Dont let the size fool you either, you can fit some pretty large trout through there!

However, I'm marking this 4 stars instead of 5 due to the hand knotted net. I understand completely that this is the traditional japanese net, but I feel the net is a little more harsh on the fish than it should be. I do my best to keep the net\fish in water at all times, but sometimes fish flop around or i loose footing temporarily and to gain balance I instintively raise my hands. Either way, the net should have the option to get a more fish friendly netting.

I feel like I've read that Tenkara USA will soon be coming out with a more fish friendly netting, but until then, I'll rate this 4/5.

  • great looking net
  • I love the aesthetics of this net and it is very practical. The shape and finish is beautiful and built with great quality. I would give this 5 stars if it came in a larger size. The net does hold a surprising large fish but I would like this in at least a normal "trout net" size.

  • Very Cool Net
  • I bought after seeing this style net after seeing in many Tenkara videos. I do like the feel of the handle, I am still deciding if I like the length of a western net better. It is very durable and I have fallen/landed on it several times.
