Chris Hendriks - Norway

Chris Hendriks - Norway

Chris Hendriks is one of the first international certified Tenkara Guides, and the main resource on tenkara in Norway.

From Chris:

My philosophy about Tenkara

I want to introduce as many people as possible into the world of fly-fishing and to lower the barriers for people to start with fly-fishing. I want to do this by teaching them how to fish with a tenkara rod and using and teaching the two key aspects of tenkara; simplicity and effectiveness.

Because the casting principles are easier to learn even for children, I can start almost immediately with teaching you how to fish, instead of spending and losing a lot of time on teaching you how to cast. I will show which flies will work and when to use them and how to use them. In addition to tenkara techniques I will also teach you other conventional western techniques.

– I will show you a maximum of 10 flies that I always have with me. Since you only have 10 different flies you will know exactly when to use them and how to use them. With this knowledge you are set for any situation you will face.
– Understanding how to read the water and observing the situation at hand is there for a very important aspect during my guiding, this is the key in understanding when to use which flies and techniques.
– Everything is taught to you with two key elements in mind; simplicity and effectivity .
You will see that a minimum of gear can give you a maximum of beautiful and unforgettable experiences that will last for a life time!

My experience;
I have 14 years of experience with traditional fly fishing and 4 years of experience with tenkara. I use the knowledge of both fly fishing techniques to create for each customer the most interesting and effective way to fish. I graduated as a fishing guide at the Sport Fishing Academy in Sweden, I am the first Tenkara USA certified fishing guide in middle and northern Europe and the first and only guide that offers tenkara guided tours in Scandinavia.
In 2013 I organised the very first European Tenkara Convention and this concept is traveling now through Europe. In 2014 it is being held in the Czech Republic and in 2015 it will be held in France.

Area of guiding:
Trysil, Norway.

I will offer you an experience that will show you the best of Trysil’s nature and fishing waters and teach you how to fish at several different fishing waters where we have completely wild fish at our disposal. Trysil has one main river the Trysil Elva, where we also fish with the tenkara rod. There are also several tributaries such as the Elta a very attractive creek which houses both small fish and good sized fish and is perfectly suited for tenkara.
The Trysil Elva is a very interesting river which changes its character several times from fast flowing rapids with several streams which are an absolute dream for the stream-fishermen to the more slow-flowing parts of the river where a perfect presentation and a long drift are needed to seduce the fish. There are also some other creeks such as the Flena which house mostly smaller fish but offer a great experience with some climbing on rocks and walking through the forest to get to the next good fishingspot which gives you a proper feeling of adventure.
The main fish to catch with the fly are Grayling and Brown trout but we also have white fish and the arctic char. Because of these different waters we also have a very wide spectrum of the most beautiful surroundings to fish at. I just named a few waters but to be honest, I am guiding for 7 years in Trysil and am still amazed about all the different fishing opportunities that we have to offer and I find every season new fishingspots.
