Altoids Fly Box

Postby flyfishbeck » Mon Oct 05, 2015 1:04 pm

My receptionist (for some reason) had a large collection of empty altoids tins. As a result, I asked her for a few and made the following fly boxes. I like the simplicity and will likely make a few for stocking stuffers. I calculated the total cost to about $0.64 per box after purchasing the foam and magnets from Hobby Lobby.

The mini sized Altoids boxes, I think they are called Altoids Smalls, are about 1/3 the size of the regular Altoids boxes, and they make nice fly boxes too. Just large enough to hold about 6 - 10 flies, depending on their size.

Which is all I need while fishing. I rarely change flies while fishing. Usually only replacing one that is lost somehow while fishing. Or maybe change flies if I want to try out some new kebari creation to find if they are fish approved.

A friend (who lives in another state) and I occasionally exchange kebari, he once sent me some in some kind of round mint tin. It was kind of cool because it has a plastic window in the top cover. (I don't recall the name of the mints) The top cover is not attached to the bottom, and requires a little extra care when opening it while standing in the stream to not be dropped and lost.

Anyway, nice job on the ones you made.

Thanks.

I didn't have a chance to load the box until last night. One modification I'm going to make is eliminate the magnet and add either a strip or two of foam, or lay a 'mat' of foam down like you did BrianB. The magnet is too weak and I see more use for the foam.
