Tenkara For Larger Western Rivers

Postby kbstull » Wed Apr 02, 2014 1:34 pm

What rod length would be recommended for fishing big dries during the summer on larger western rivers like the Madison or Big Hole in Montana or Deschutes in Oregon? Thanks!

I like my Ito for that kind of water.

Get the biggest rod you can get your hands on. I find I can fish with a rod one-handed up to 15'. Any longer and I have to use two hands.
If you're going to be fishing where there is a chance of hooking into a bigger fish, then I suggest a rod that is sturdier than the Ito.

I fish the Madison a lot and usually use my Ito or Amago. I've never had a problem with either.

Ito and Amago are good choices for larger waters.

If trout are 20" or less most all the time, the Ito is awesome! Casted at 14'7" makes for great long casts holding the level line off the water at a greater distance for wonderful drag free drifts.

If trout are often 20" or over, then go for the Amago. At 13'6" it is almost as long as the Ito but has more backbone to land the larger trout.

Hope this helps.
