Need to sharpen your knife? Give the blade a few swipes across the unglazed bottom of a coffee mug.

Fine china works even better (cups, plates, bowls) because they use a finer grade of material than used in normal mugs.

For a really fine edge, roll your car window down part way, and use the top edge of the glass!

And of course, for an emergency sharpening when you're about to broil a trout over the fire by a remote stream, you can use about any smooth river stone!

I missed this post earlier. Incidentally, I first saw this trick (using the mug) on my last visit to Japan. I thought it was the coolest thing, though I'll admit I haven't used it yet, still reaching for the sharpening stone. But, now that I saw this post I'll try to do it next time I need to.

neat little trick. I'll have to try it the next time I need to sharpen a knife.
