Tenkara for Shad?

A place to discuss techniques and rigging options for use in "non-mountain stream" areas such as lakes and warm-water areas, as well as non-traditional tenkara techniques such as nymphing.

Tenkara for Shad?

Postby dc_tenkara » Fri Mar 11, 2016 12:55 pm

Good afternoon Tenkara anglers. I live near Washington DC and am gearing up for the shad run in the Potomac River this year. I have a Tenkara rod that I have been playing around with in nearby streams and ponds, but would love to give it a shot for Tenkara shad.

Does anyone have any thoughts on if this is possible, and if so, how I would rig up?

Thanks for the advice!

We have some pretty epic shad runs up here too. I just tie a 1/32 shad dart right on to my tippet. I imagine you could tie a brightly colored bead head with equally good results. Like the ones here:
