Another cheap, quick and easy line winder option -

A swimming pool noodle sliced into slabs with a groove cut in the edge. Not pretty, but works great.

Now that's an ingenious idea. I have to say I think that's the best one yet. The fly will stick anywhere on the winder, it's soft enough to not damage the rod in any way, and best of all it's cheap and easy to make.

Pipe insulation foam tubes can be cut into wheels and they already have the grooves cut,

great, thank you verily - you've just given me the missing idea for a MYOG ultralight weight fly reel, for which I've been playing around with concepts and ideas - of course, pool tube foam, that'll give me a simple way & quick way of making the large arbour on the spool. oops - this is not for tenkara - faux pas  but still, thanks.
