Casting Question

Casting Question

Postby loafskibum » Wed May 08, 2013 9:18 am

In close to 50% of my casts, the last few feet of line hit the water before my fly. The other 50% is fly then line if the line even touches down. Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong?

Ps landed three brook trout this am so this isint totally killing me.

The thing that I first think of is what position the rod tip is when casting. I find that if my rod tip stays from 12 to 2, I can get the fly to hit first. If I start getting "lower" the more line goes on the water. I also helps to keep your elbow close as possible to your body when casting. My .02.

it really depends on your casting plane as well as when, where and force of the stop on the forward cast.

play around with those variables and you will see that the steeper the casting plane and moredefined the forward cast/stop is, the more likely the fly will hit the water first.
