Tenkara [Carp] Diaries, May 28th

Carp fishing with tenkara. It has been done before but I figured it was the time I went out and personally tested our rods with them. Yesterday I spotted a good number of carp right in town. I decided to take the tenkara rod with me today and test it out with those big fish. Fun, and much more manageable with tenkara than I had imagined. I used the Amago tenkara rod, about 15ft of tenkara level line and 4x tippet, plus a wooly bugger as well as a tenkara fly.

Very nice to see Daniel. I have hooked many Carp but they have always stolen my fly after breaking my tippet. The battle after hooking only takes me a few seconds before its over. I wonder if a different type of Carp or Carp stuck in a small impoundment is a difference that is effecting my landing.

Its nice to see the spirit of Tenkara being used for the joy
of just fishing, i love that!

I use 5x tippet mostly, and occasionally 7x. I’ll experiment some more and target smaller Carp.

Nice! I just hooked into my first Tenkara carp a few weeks ago. An 8lb to 10lb is an eye opener. I am going to give it another try with the squirmy wormy fly. Gotta love flies that you can get all your materials at the Dollar Store!

  5. Wow! Great video, Daniel.

very nice post daniel. i’ve seen carp rolling in the creek-down-the-way, but i could not get them to strike. the water was stained, so proper fly placement was difficult. the fact i was trying to use a popper prolly had a lot to do with the lack of action. =p

    i’ll try a bugger next time…

With knowing this how do you think that rod would be in Some saltwater, I’m from a Coastal area of South Texss, , I know a Carp will put up a fight of dead wieght! And congrats on you exploring a new area of Tenkara!

    • Jon, there are quite a few reports of folks using tenkara in salt water, not for very large fish but baby tarpon, small bonefish, and many perch have been caught with our rods.
