In tenkara–the book, Tenkara USA founder Daniel Galhardo shows just how simple fly-fishing can be. This book is a complete guide to the techniques, gear, history and philosophy of tenkara, the Japanese method of fly-fishing. It is also a manifesto on fly-fishing simplicity.
An angler picking up a tenkara rod for the first time will find this book’s concepts well laid out and intuitive. The experienced angler will appreciate the simpler approach to fly-fishing and the advanced techniques shared in the book. Throughout the book Daniel brings the reader along a journey of learning tenkara directly from the masters in Japan as he shares information on the method’s equipment and techniques. tenkara - the book was designed to be interactive and take advantage of all the resources we have created over the years. Thorough the book readers will find QR (quick read) codes that will give access to the videos, podcast episodes and other complementary information to the chapters at hand.
The best way to keep fly-fishing simple is to learn how to rely more on technique rather than gear. This book contains that knowledge.

  • Tenkara -- The Book answers every question the new (or advanced) Tenkara angler might ever have
  • Location/type of places I fish: Private fly fishing club, rivers draining into Lake Erie, PA streams
  • At last! The BEST English language book on Tenkara history and lore, rod-line-tippet selection & rigging, fly selection, casting techniques, reading water, plus playing & landing fish without a reel. Extensively illustrated with highlighted color photos showing knots, fish holding locations and fly presentation as well as still images of casting strokes. But there's MORE! Almost every "teaching point" has a scan code link and a website link to a video clearly demonstrating the technique in question, and/or expanded text coverage -- call up the links on your laptop for home reading or scan them on your smart phone for on-stream consultation. Next best thing to taking a Tenkara class from Daniel himself. My paperback copy will ride in a gallon zip-lock bag in my car trunk tackle organizer henceforward. I may even get a second shelf copy for my angling book collection, to keep one nice & clean.

  • Beautiful and Informative Book
  • Location/type of places I fish: Pennsylvania streams
  • I received this book a few days before a fishing trip to northern Pennsylvania. I'm a novice tenkara and overall flyfisherman so I jumped right in. The book is not only well designed and beautiful with myriad photographs, charts, diagrams, etc....but also packed with information. If you're a novice like me or a much more experienced fisherman or woman, you will absolutely find a whole lot of value and pleasure in this book. Highly recommended!

Great read and I really appreciated the videos that were attached to some of the chapters that will definitely benefit people like me that are just starting to use Tenkara. Great job Daniel Gelhardo. Thanks again for introducing tenkara to the USA.

  • Beautiful, Informative and Spiritual
  • Location/type of places I fish: Ocean - Lakes and Ponds - Rivers and Streams---mud puddles if they contained fish
  • Daniel's book is a gem. As a relative newcomer or a seasoned veteran of tenkara, this is the book for you. The beginning contains all the information you need to have a successful start to fishing tenkara. The capsule sketches of the people involved in Daniel's education are amazing. I wish I could just sit and watch these wonderful folks fish.

The book then goes far beyond the equipment and technique and goes into the Zen of Tenkara. You soon realize that taking up tenkara makes you into a lifelong learner and observer. Everyone learns and personalizes the tenkara method to his or her physical skills, fishing locations, quarry and even psychological needs.

It's rare to find a book that is as informative as it is spiritual. Tenkara - The Book is just that. You will be reading and reading Daniel's masterpiece and probably tweak your technique after each reading.

Daniel's passion for this technique comes through in his writing which is engaging and informative. I will be sharing this text with my fishing buddies no doubt!
