“I think simple is almost always better in fly-tying, if for no other reason than it gives trout less to find fault with” – Walt Young, fly-tyer and fly-fishing competitor in an interview with Morgan Lyle for his book “Simple Flies: 52 Easy-to-Tie Patterns that Catch Fish“.
Simplicity is the word most closely associated with tenkara, and certainly simple flies are a part of that. Morgan Lyle, inspired by the tenkara movement, created a book about that very topic: Simple Flies. His book, Simple Flies, features tenkara flies as well as other flies that use a minimal amount of materials and are not “fussy” to tie.
Daniel and Morgan talk in-depth about simple flies as well as how to keep fly-fishing simple and whether the idea that “any fly” works has merit to it.
