Tenkara

Rory Glennie – BC, Canada

Vancouver Island is blessed with countless waters particularly suited to tenkara fly-fishing. Streams like the Englishman, Quinsam, Little Qualicum and Elk rivers come to mind, as do many tiny mountainous headwater flows of larger rivers. There are some streams I know, where at places you can actually jump across without getting wet, which hold some surprisingly nice native Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout. These are without exception pretty trout in pretty surroundings. This is secretive fishing in intimate surroundings. For more information, contact Rory at IslandSerenity@uniserve.com.

Rory Glennie is a member of Fly Fishing Team Canada and has represented the country at two World Fly Fishing Championships; in North Wales, UK and in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, USA. His first “tenkara” rod was a limber alder sapling with a piece of nylon mono attached to the tip and a crudely dressed deer hair fly tied to the end. It was an impromptu moment on a tiny stream which just begged to be fished; discovered while out picking mushrooms. That was more than forty years ago. Now an Amago or Ito by Tenkara USA is his rod of choice.
