I have not removed all the segments from a TenkaraUSA rod yet and wondered when I do this, do I need to untie the knot on the Lilian? I purchased 2 used TenkaraUSA rods recently and one appears to have sand or grit in it. I can hear it as I opened the rod. I can even seen some scratches on the largest rod segments. I want to take it apart and wipe it all off and not sure if I can do this with the Lilian knotted up.

Thanks

tj

Anyone?

Strange for no answers after a day or so. Normally Tenkara folk are VERY quick to answer.

I already viewed the video about replacing a broken tip but that is not the same as mine because a new tip appears to come untied so was not sure how I deal with my issue of just a rod break-down for cleaning. Not sure lilians should be untied once tied since the tips are maybe easy to break.

Thanks for any guidance on this,

tj

* Something tells me with a lilian tied, it is too thick to go throw out the back of the piece is is nestled with so that is why I want to find out proper way to clean all sections and break-down tips.

Hey TJ,

I do remove the top segment from no. 2 with the know and without the knot in the lilian. I was a bit nervous the first time though whether I could "feed" it back into segment 2. I wouldn't force it though if you can't. Dirt and dust will be most likely in the lower segments.

This is now normal procedure for me after coming home from fishing - take all segments apart, rinse and dry on the outside with a soft towel and let air dry the inside. Preferable you want this to somewhere out of the way of any 3year olds.... or the cleaning lady  .

Thanks gonefly.... maybe I don't need to do the top tip and #2 if the grit is at bottom for now. Will check that out.

Thanks

After each outing, I remove the butt cap and take out all the blank segments so they can dry. You could take them apart and wash them either with just running water or perhaps some mild soap, then set them aside to dry. I do not untie the knot in the end of the lillian, so for most of my rods, the last two segments remain together, and on one, in which I tied a slightly larger fugure 8 knot in the lillian, the last 3 segments remain together.

If you work at it with a couple needles, you can untie the lillian, but it probably isn't necessary - particularly if the grit seems to be in the lower sections. I would still rinse it well, though, in case some dust or very small grit got into those sections as well.

Best regards,
Chris

Same answer. I usually leave the top 2 segments together, if I must remove the tip I open the knot with a needle. To reinsert it, it's helpful to twist the tip as you push it in and through the end of the second segment.

Do you really take out all blank segments after each fishing trip? Never done this. I keep a bit more simple. One of my important accessories is a small microfleece towel with which i dry and clean the rod before i push it together. So i have always i dry rod and don't have to take out the segments at home. Never had problems with sand or other things in the rod.

Really do. It gets a bit interesting after having been out testing lines when I have all the tubes from 7 or 8 rods laying around. I've never had a problem with grit, but have had a surprising amount of moisture in the rods even on a dry day when I never got the rods in the water. Just the water transferred from a wet line was able to get into the joints. It might not be necessary, but as long as I'm careful where I place them to dry it certainly doesn't hurt.
