Daniel,
Last year at the Summit, I noticed you using a water filter mounted to your drinking bottle.
What brand of filter setup is that? I am very interested in not having to carry so much gear or water for a long day on the water and that looked like an ideal setup.

Thanks,
Bruce

I strongly recommend Sawyer water filters. The "Squeeze" is the best. Very easy to use, small, an good filtration.

ERiK,
That is exactly the system I was looking at and wondered if it was the same one Daniel had been using.
I go through a lot of water on hot days and would like to not have to carry a 2 liter Camelbak or pair of Sigg bottles for a day's fishing, but I don't dare not carry water as I can get very bad headaches and other heat problems. That looked like a good way to at least supplement my water supply when I'm on the stream.

Thanks for the input.

Bruce

I switched to a water bottle with a filter on it 18 months ago. I love it. It cut down the amount of weight tremendously. Plus you don't have that tube slung over your shoulder to get tangled in things.

I don't have a preferred brand, but do subscribe to you get what you pay for with a filter.

I was using an Aquamira Frontier Pro filter. It is very thin and compact. I still use it, it's always in my waders.

But on this post Greg pointed out how the Frontier pro only goes down to 3 microns and that I should look at the Sawyer filter for it goes down to 0.1 and can stop bacteria.
I have acquired the Sawyer Squeeze filter, but have not yet used it. It looks very good, and is also compact, though not as skinny. Both can go on a regular water bottle (though I use a bladder so I can fold it easily).
Likewise i do not like getting dehydrated and always need water with me. If I know I'm staying on a stream the whole time I leave the bladder behind. If there is a chance I'll be on trail for a bit I'll bring the bladder with me.

I saw the Sawyer Squeeze filter recommended in the post on an AT trail journal a couple of weeks ago and this afternoon I went to 3 local stores that are supposed to carry their products but none of them had any of the Sawyer products in stock. I guess I live in too small of a community. I will have to order it from an on-line supplier. I was also looking to purchase the Sawyer Permethrin insect repellent and Picaridin insect repellent ( it will not damage your equipment like DEET) , struck out there too.

You have to read carefully the specs on the Sawyer filters, some are .1 filters and others are .02 filters. The Squeeze is a .1 filter.

Here's Sawyer's video of the Squeeze filter

http://www.sawyer.com/video-squeeze.html

Pretty sweet if it works as advertised.

You might find this information about purifying water interesting. Perhaps its main point is that if you filter your water but neglect to wash your hands you may by pass the filtering you did of your water.

UL Backpacking Water Purification , about 7 minutes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ad6wo8XnQBk

Text and more information from the same information source

http://hikelight.com/18ultralightbackpackingwatertreatment.html

From the above text;
"One conclusion of this paper is that you can indeed contract giardiasis on visits to the Sierra Nevada, but it won’t be from the water. So drink freely and confidently: Proper personal hygiene is far more important in avoiding giardiasis than treating the water."

Neither the video nor the text pitch the Sawyer Squeeze filter but I think that is what I will be ordering. And it comes with 3 sizes of water pouches, .5L, 1L and 2 L.

I use both filters. The Frontier Pro can be used inline with a camelbak type bladder system. With it's relatively slim design it works really well with the bladders. I like the Sawyer system for guide trips because it can easily be used to fill guests water bottles if needed.
