Hi all,

I've started experimenting with woven nymphs done sakasa style, and I wanted to share my latest effort. Upper part was 3 strands of black embroidery thread, and bottom was tightly-twisted killer bug yarn. Apart from the copper ribbing, no extra weight was used.

Very cool albertyi, here's some links to some other woven flies.

I think this would add appeal to the flies making them have more substance for fish to hold on to. Instead of spitting out an unnatural feeling hook.

Albert...I like them alot. They have a very "buggy" appearance to them. Have you tried other variations for the yarn or top embroidery thread yet? I'll bet you could make some very interesting "match-the-hatch" sort of flies. I think having a top and bottom to the fly's body can make for some very cool flies. I have experimented with that idea alittle too, just not with sakasa kebari (I like using the curved Mustad C49S scud hooks for my s.k. and I find it difficult to do that with a curved hook). If you go to my blog's "fly box" I have a bucktail and another soft hackle that's my best effort at a firefly immatation where I tried that giving the fly a top and bottom. If you tie any variations we'd love to see them.

I tie a lot of woven flies. One of my most common ones is the cajun tickler for bass. I use two to three strands of embroidery thread depending on the size. Lately, I have been experimenting with weaving horse hair. So far I have had some really cool results. I will try to take some pictures and post them in the next couple days.

Albert,

Cool flies! It's stimulating to see these creative experiments going on. Let us know how it fishes if you get a chance.

albertyi,

You read my mind. I'm doing something similar with Shetland spindrift black on top and oyster on bottom. The rest is quite a bit different, though.

We'll have to compare notes after fishing them a bit.

Beautiful pattern. It has been a long time since I have tied a woven fly. You have inspired me to go at it again. Thanks for sharing this one.

Carl
