Dave,
I should probably have been a bit more clear on my update. We have decided to offer a replacement handle to make the Iwana a shorty - not 9ft long, but rather 10ft. It's now available here:
http://www.tenkarausa.com/product_info.php/products_id/117. This will allow people to use their existing Iwana rod without having to buy a brand new one.
I have talked a lot about rod length and won't go into too much detail here, but, I still do not believe there is value in offering a very short 9ft rod and believe that number is often requested because we use western fly-fishing as a benchmark. A 10ft rod is plenty short for very small streams while maintaining the integrity and advantages of the length of a tenkara rod. If absolutely necessary the rod may be held above the handle to make it a 9ft (in my experience this is pretty rare), and if you collapse one segment for a cast to the tightest of places and hold it above the handle you are fishing it as a 7ft rod. I think there is more value in having the versatility of a 10ft rod than to handicap it by making it 9ft long.
I hope we didn't disappoint many (actually, I really hope I didn't disappoint any) of you by not going all the way down to 9ft, but the 10ft version is a sweet, delightful t
enkara rod. And, it won't cost you a lot to convert your current rod to that length.
