nope Kuhlow. I guess I should come with a name. -The Turkey dinner kebari- will be the name. I ran across a large pile of feathers on the river many months ago. Something enjoyed a Turkey dinner two feet from the water. I collected many feathers. I never buy feathers. They are a bit expensive and I find them everywhere I go.

I know you can find feathers wherever you go, but for most of them it is illegal to take them. After many bird species were decimated by the trade in feathers for women's hats, extremely strict laws were passed that make it illegal to possess just about any feather that isn't from a game bird that was legally shot (and even some of those if you didn't shoot them yourself!) or from a farmed bird, or from a bird that is not protected (and the only unprotected birds I know of are the English Sparrow and the starling). And it doesn't matter if the bird was roadkill or a coyote's dinner, just having the feathers is illegal.

I have only heard of one person who was arrested and fined for using found feathers, and realistically, it is likely that he was arrested only because he was very public in his use of illegal feathers. Still, you should be aware that it is illegal and the fines, however unlikely, can be severe.

Yes Cm stewart, thanks for the warning. Well I'm glad I posted this for the knowledge for us all especailly me. I just read a few things. The Laws are pretty simple and clear. I'll have to get some of the legal ones for tying. Starlings beware.

Because of the migratory bird treaty act it is illegal to possess feathers (or any part) of any native wild bird without a permit (a hunting licence serves as the permit in game situations). This even includes stuffing a dead bird to display to school kids. You must apply for a permit to possess anything. Permits are not granted for anything that could even look remotely like a comercial endevor. (The feather trade of the early 20th century decimated many populations of birds in the name of fancy hats.) Non-native species like house sparrows, starlings, monk parakeets, etc do not apply. Livestock and pets also do not apply. So if you know someone who raises native game birds, ducks, chickens, exotic parrots, etc. they can sell or distribute the feathers.
Luckily I've got the proper license for the turkey. But I'll definatley be more careful with the future feather indeavors.

Great flies Jeremy, are they some you'll be fishing when we meet for Tennessee Tenkara? I'm going to have to spend some time at the bench before then.

Hey Tom, I've got to let you try some of the Guinea fowl glow flies. They work great for winter fishing. Since there's so much less light. Yes you'll see all of my strange flies. I'm pretty new at fly fishing and tying but each fly I've made so far has caught a fish. I'm by no means anywhere near experienced enough to have a one fly pattern.
