Very insightful JD. I haven't heard or thought of that before.
I just gave it a quick try and it seems to work well, though to be honest I'm not sure about any differences because I really do not have a problem with it.
I broke your instructions down below, hope you don't mind and thank you for the contribution:

1) Start by holding the spool in the vertical position
2) Wrap over the top away from yourself and under the bottom toward your self,
3) Wrap about half of the line this way and then flip the spool over in hand and continue wrapping the line. In this position you will be wrapping over the top toward yourself and under the bottom away from yourself.
