Please note, not all telescopic rods out there are tenkara rods, and not all old bamboo rods are tenkara bamboo rods..

Every now and then I run across a site (or someone) selling what they call a "tenkara rod", I have also seen old bamboo rods being sold as tenkara rods. Please be careful when purchasing these as the majority I have seen are not really tenkara rods.

On telescopic rods the main visual characteristic of a tenkara rod is the handle (usually cork, but also foam, wood, etc). This is necessary for comfortable and frequent casting.

Bamboo tenkara rods are VERY rare, and though I have seen several bamboo rods posted as tenkara rods on ebay, none have been so far. Again, the main visual characteristic is a more ornate handle for casting.
