I'm looking at heading to SE Idaho and Yellowstone in mid July with my wife and 3 kids (7, 6, 3). My wife was just converted to fly fishing and tenkara a week ago fishing around Mammoth Lakes, CA. She actually caught 2 of the biggest fish of the trip, and that includes my 3 brothers, cousin, and dad. She's the only lady allowed on the trip and she killed it using my Amago. Now she wants to fish bigger rivers where big fish live, plus beautiful surroundings. We're looking at heading to SE Idaho for 2-3 days, then Yellowstone for 2-3 days, then stopping for one day somewhere in Utah for some serious tenkara fishing with our kids. I'm currently showing my kids and wife my very limited knowledge of tenkara fishing so they'll be ready when we head out. What I was hoping for was any information about places to fish, camp, etc in SE Idaho, Yellowstone, and one day in Utah on the way home. We live in Southern CA. We're actually hitting up some local lakes and streams in the San Bernadino Mtns in the morning to practice and catch some stockers and wild trout. Any help would be greatly appreciated as we've never been to SE Idaho, Yellowstone, or Utah and I want this to be a memorable fishing trip for my wife and kids, and get them hooked on tenkara like I am.

PM me and I will leave you my number. Call me when you come through and I will show you a great spot to both camp and fish tenkara when you come through Utah. It is a good spot for families especially with kids.

In Idaho you can fish and camp in the Copper Basin. Beautiful and plenty of fishing. This area is not large fish but plenty of them. I little off of the main tourist attractions, so will meet locals and other fishermen getting away from the crowds. The Tetons are on the way to Yellowstone too. Depending on what way you are going to enter Yellowstone I would check out Beaverhead (20 - 30 inch trout), and/or the Gallitan (great evening Caddis Hatch). Of Course there is alway the infamous rivers everyone is always talking about too.

You will have a great trip where ever you go. All of that area is gorgeous country. Have a great trip.

In Yellowstone Park I fish Slough Creek and the Firehole. If you run up into the Gallatin Valley there severl tribs that feed the Gallatin that have loads of fish in them.

You guys are awesome. thanks so much for the help and info on great places to take my wife and kids to fish. All we need to do know is plan out the trip and pick some campgrounds and dates.

@rmcworthing: thanks for the number, we'll give you a call once we figure out what days we can make the trip work

@narcodog & tsegelke: thanks for the rivers and campsites, I've fished the Gallatin where it runs outside Bozeman, MT when I was in college 15 years ago, so it's been a while since I've been to the area.

We'll let you guys know what locations we decide to go to and give a report on how the kids did learning to tenkara fish. If any of you are around where we stop feel free to pm me if you want to fish.

Which Hwy are you coming into Utah on? Hwy 89 follows the Logan River, beautiful stream, the cutts were hungry today. The very highest section of the river is closed until the second saturday of July. The Blacksmith Fork is also nearby. The Ogden and the Weber are close to I-15.

We take hwy 15 basically from our front door in S. CA and then all the way through Utah until we hit Idaho Falls, Idaho, then the 20 to Old Faithful. Haven't been through since I went to college at MT State in Bozeman.

Beaver, UT is the halfway point for us (where as kids we used to stop on my families annual trip to Lewistown, MT, and my great grandma's cattle ranch) and we're thinking about stopping at a hotel there for the night, and hopefully fishing somewhere within 30-45 minutes of town that is kid and tenkara friendly. Any insight?

Dwr reports say the Beaver River is low and the trout spooky on the upper river. The river is higher and the trout less spooky below Minersville Resevoir, never fished either one.

When you get up to West Yellowstone, stop in Blue Ribbon Flies (Craig Matthews) at the north end of town going toward Bozeman. He is a great Tenkara fisherman and his fly shop supports Tenkara big time. He will point you in the right direction for some quality fishing in and out of the park. Grab one of his catalogs and read the article by Yvon Chouinard about Tenkara.

If you are in the are July 14th come on down to Bozeman. Fin and Feathers Fly Shop at Four Corners is hosting a Tenkara Clinic with Daniel Gallardo (http://www.finsandfeathersonline.com/bl ... nkara-day/). Four corners is the first stop light north of West Yellowstone about 90 miles away. Fin and Feathers is a good Tenkara dealer also. Ask for John.

Have a fun trip and a good time. Carry bear spray (one each for everyone), don't try and pet the bison.
