I love lanyards.

Simply put, I feel they are one of the best ways for me to carry my gear on the river, and not just for Tenkara. It's also an amazing way for me to keep my gear ready for a grab and go mission. It stays in my car in a perpetual state of constant vigilance, often ignored, but seldom forgotten.

I like to grab the free neoprene croakie sunglass holders from swag bags, trade shows etc and use those as the neck piece for comfort. I then make a base with craft lace and braid the exterior with waxed thread. I've never had one break, although my friends do walk off with them. Maybe I should make them mankier. For clasps, I use stainless swivel snaps from eagle claw. You can/should use a more subdued clasp, but I like bling.

For those of you that make your own lanyards, what works for you?

Hey acheateaux!
Just got back from the 2nd Annual Tenkara Summit in Utah where I ran into my first lanyards! Just took up Tenkara a little over a year ago, did mainly bate fishing before. So I went to Cabelas to check out lanyards and they want $28 for a basic one!! WTH! So I said to myself, "self, we can make that for a lot less I bet!?" So I came home tonight to check out the forum as i always do and whala! There was your post! Gave me some great ideas! Have you more to share? Suppliers, costs, more photos? THANKS Bud, Tim P. (tejplunkett@yahoo.com) or the forum.

I like using wax thread from craft supply stores, but Ive also made some out of hemp. There are all kinds of braiding tutorials online, I tend to use a spiral weave/braid. Cheap snaps from Walmart or craft store work good to. It's good to have some form of quick release if you plan on wading faster moving waters.

I'm planning on making a new one up for the wife, maybe I'll do a build step by step...

I made a few lanyards with just black cord and pieces of 1/8 black irrigation/drip sprinkler tubing. I do however prefer a little over the shoulder bag for my fishing now.
