Here is an article by a guy who has been dapping with long rods for 40 years and says it's the best way to catch large trout.

With the opening sentence of that article it looks like the campaign to establish that Tenkara is not dapping is going to be a long up hill battle.

Not quit sure why they started their article with these words - "Tenkara rods and dapping are..." . I saw 2 pictures of rods and they both had reels on them.

Maybe we need a "Western is Dapping" campaign?

I don't understand why dapping gets a bad rap. Especially if one celebrates stealth while fishing. I connected with the second largest rainbow I ever hooked while dapping from a steep bank on the Big Hole. She was feeding in a large eddy, a lovely, lively fish. Hey, why cast when it's not necessary?

That is exactly what I have been thinking for a while. It may not be as sporting as a 50 ft cast with a dry fly, but it isn't using a spoon or crappie jig.

Thanks for bringing the article up. In this case I had to post my own reply there.

I, for one, do not take any issues with the technique in any manner. There is nothing wrong with it, great technique. However, as we strive to introduce tenkara to people, the continued misconception that tenkara is "only" or "simply", or "just" dapping is very limiting to the understanding of what tenkara is. It is a real shame, in my opinion, that so many people just assume outright that tenkara is just dapping and thus ignore it completely. This changes instantly when I give casting demonstrations, and then people realize tenkara is not just dapping.
It is a matter of educating the fishing public on what tenkara is, or in this case what it is not.

A possible suggestion:

I feel that one of the most effective messages that can be featured is a drawing or logo showing a tenkara rod with its line in mid-cast in an airfoil shape. For a great example, look at the photo of Daniel casting in his blog post "Tenkara is not dapping."

What if, as part of a "tenkara is not dapping" campaign, something looking like the green tenkara rod in the TenkaraUSA logo is shown casting a line? Short of a live casting demonstration, something like that photo of casting, except perhaps simplified into a logo drawing would make one of the best statement possible that tenkara is not dapping.

Anyway this is food for thought.

I would for sure use the new Tenkara Is Not Dapping blog picture on future magazine ads, web ads, blow it up and have on the new Tenkara USA booths at the fly shows, etc...

That picture alone should do wonders.

I'm really not trying to be controversial here, but...

I dap with tenkara all the time. I cast most of the time, but dapping is definitely one of the methods I use.

Particularly when walking on a bank, cliff, road or trail that is above the river or stream. If I see a good hole, I'll just simply drop the fly onto the hole. The drifts can be some of the absolute best you'll ever get, and it often results in a fish. There may be some video of it somewhere in the archives...

I agree that tenkara is much, much more than dapping, but sometimes it can be. I'm sure a poor professional fisherman living amongst the mountain streams would dap if it meant catching fish.

Again, not trying to be controversial.

Point of Information: The dapping I described in a prior post in this thread wan not done with a tenkara pole; I had a reel on my rod, doing what some of us call "western fly fishing." A longer pole, like my Ayu, would have been a better dapping tool, though, and I wish I would have owned one back then.

As an aside, using the term "western" in that context grates on me, likely because I am not particularly Asian-oriented. To me, Western connotes west of St. Louis, not west of Bangladesh or east of Hokkaido. My personal preference would be "conventional fly fishing" in lieu of "western fly fishing." Just sayin'.
