I wanted to make a few hot head nymphs but had run out of appropriate size hooks. All I had was some hopper hooks that are long and have a crinkle in the middle to keep the hook straight inside the hopper body. They were about size 8 so I thought about cutting them shorter and making a eye out of some red mono I have like the flies I have seen here on this forum tied on hooks without eyes.

I cut the hooks in mid wiggle keeping a little upward slant and tied in the mono and superglued the wrapping well. These are the ones I made. You can learn some neat stuff here at TenkaraUSA.

johngunguy I like the idea of the flies with the larger eye. I've been looking at the forum for some of the ideas and would like to try some of those quick change set ups. But wonder were to get the correct thread or line for the job. Anybody out there tying Mr. Katsutoshi Amano style flies? I will use a vice though.
Jeremy

For my flies I tied the eye using Cajun Red mono. I think it was either 12 or 15lb test. I tied in the loop with my regular tying thread and the mono was the length of the hook shaft. I also applied some superglue to make sure the mono didn't slip. It does make attaching the leader easier as well as imparting more action to the fly.

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving I fished for a while in wet cold air. I decided after a couple fly changes that there's got to be a better way to tie on with cold hands. With a bigger loop for an eye it could be done in mittens. Especially with a loop on the tippet. I'll have to try this. Winter cold is a poor excuse for not fishing after all. I can imagine the fly movements are great with the extra play. Might even get a hook up on finicky winter fish.
