I've not posted on the forum before, but some of you may know me. I write the blog Northern California Trout (northerncaliforniatrout.com) and I also am a freelance writer and contributor to the local newspaper the Amador Ledger Dispatch and it's blog.

Since summer has arrived I've been fishing with my Iwana almost exclusively the last month and a half or so. I've been hitting streams locally that I've fished in the past and caught, maybe one or two fish and those are all time numbers. Since I started fishing with my Tenkara Iwana the days have gone like this. Seven brought to hand and 10 to 15 missed. Nine brought to hand and 15 or so missed. Every creek I've fished I've written about. It seems that I've caught the attention of the Amador Fly Fishing Club. I'm meeting with the Programs Director on Monday and talking about doing a presentation in 2013 and a big part of that presentation is Tenkara fishing.

When I met Daniel at the Fly Fishing Show in Pleasanton in February I wasn't sure about Tenkara fishing. I'm sure now.

Enjoyed your blog and especially the post about your son tenkara fishing. I've come to the view that the traditional fishing line laid out on the water creates unavoidable problems in actually catching fish. So techniques like tenkara or Czech nymphing where only the tip of the leader is in the water tend to be more effective. And this conclusion is coming from someone who loves the art of traditional fly casting and who often casts for fun.

Hi shoreman, Just hang in there. I went through the same thing at first in my Trnkara fishing, which was a lot of missed fish compared to the strike ratio. There is a learning curve involved with Tenkara fly fishing that will shortly sort its self out and the ratio of missed strikes to fish hooked, but not necessarily caught, will become much improved all on its own. Keep up the good work; you and your son will get there soon enough if you keep working at it....Karl.

Thanks Guys. I guess the old saying "practice makes perfect" applies. I'll just have to get out there and do it some more.

7 and 9 caught fish on a single trip, to me, equals huge success. Just think of the folks not near trout streams that hardly get a chance to catch trout at all.

To me success = just getting to fish.

Kick butt day = you have caught 1 or more fish.

Thanks for sharing with us.

Hi Mark/Shoreman:

I see you're not too far south of me. I'm up in Colfax which is on the 80 about halfway from Sacramento towards Lake Tahoe. If you find yourself in my area and would like to fish the Bear river, the Yuba, the Truckee, Prosser creek, or any of the other rivers up here let me know. It would be great to fish with a Tenkara fisherman to see how this whole system works.

Of course, my local shop, Fly Fishing Specialties just got their Tenkara rods and I saw them last night. Oh my gosh I want one now. I think may buy one before the summer is over.

My contact info is on my www.gbguitars.com website.
