About Daniel W. Galhardo
Through Tenkara USA, I am the first person to introduce tenkara outside of Japan. I have been dedicated full-time to Tenkara USA since its inception in 2009.
I was born in Brazil in 1983, and moved to California as an exchange student in 2000. I decided to stay here for school as well as for the trout fishing, rock climbing and surfing. I attended the University of San Francisco, and earned degrees in International Business and Finance, as well as a minor in Asian Studies.
In 2007, I married Margaret, who is Japanese-American and probably served as a catalyst for me to find tenkara. In the same year we married we started preparing to visit Japan on what was my first visit, and so I started researching fly-fishing opportunities in Japan. Noticing the abundance of mountain streams, I theorized Japan must have a very rich fly-fishing tradition that we rarely heard of. This prompted me to research the history of fly-fishing in the Japan and find out they had something called tenkara.
On our trip to Japan in 2008 I visited several tackle shops in different areas and learned more about tenkara. Picking up a rod brought me back to my childhood years of fishing with a telescopic rod, a time when fishing was super simple and very relaxing. But, it combined that simple form of fishing with the elegance of fly-fishing, something that led me to teach myself fly-fishing while still living in Brazil about 10 years earlier.
Soon after returning from that trip, and completely consumed with a new passion, I noticed I could not find any good information on tenkara in English. I fell in love with the simplicity and effectiveness of the method, as well as its portability for backpacking. I wanted to learn more.
At the same time, while serving on the board of directors of a renowned fly-fishing and casting club in San Francisco, I noticed a lot of people new to fly-fishing thought fly-fishing was intimidating and too complex. And, the experienced anglers I knew seemed to really enjoy mountain stream fishing, yet after learning about tenkara I thought their equipment was not the most suited for the type of fishing they liked. Tenkara seemed to be the solution for them.
And so Tenkara USA was born. I started studying the method and the equipment and designing the rods, lines and flies necessary for tenkara. I created Tenkara USA out of a desire to tell the world about this wonderful and until then unknown method of fly-fishing. Out of a desired to tell people, "fly-fishing is very simple! Here's how simple it can be". And, out of a desired to learn more about a method that was so simple and enjoyable, but that also had so much more to offer below its surface.
Through strong relationships with tenkara masters in Japan, particularly Dr. Hisao Ishigaki, the most prominent tenkara angler in Japan and my sensei, I try to ensure that tenkara, as it is introduced outside its country of origin, does not lose sight of its roots. I rely heavily on the knowledge and feedback of my teachers in Japan to ensure Tenkara USA products are of the highest quality and remain true to tenkara. I'm very grateful for them to have so openly shared their tenkara with me.
Over the last several years I have been dedicated to learning everything there is to know about tenkara and sharing that with the world. In frequent visits to Japan, I spend most of my time among the tenkara masters of the country learning the nuances of the method: its techniques, culture, and what is necessary to make good tenkara equipment.
